Remembering Veteran’s Day 2013

Veteran's Day Ceremony 2013

If my dad were living by himself, Veteran’s Day would have come and gone just like any other day.  But, at his assisted living community, my dad and the other Veteran’s were heroes for a day.  They were honored for their service with a patriotic ceremony complete with singing, speeches and recognition in the form of certificates and American flag pins.

And, there was a wonderful surprise during the event.  My dad’s friend and fellow resident, Mr. Gray who served in three wars and had an illustrious military career, spoke about my father’s service in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II.

At a time when my father and his fellow residents rely on the services of others, it was empowering to turn the clock back and acknowledge their bravery, heroism and service to our country.
