A Simple Act of Kindness

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.  Aesop

Yesterday the most ordinary gesture turned in to the most amazing exchange between two strangers.  This entire meeting took less than five minutes but ended with the words “I love you”.

It started as a typical Monday.  I drove to work and was getting out of the parking garage elevator when I spotted something amiss in the sea of people with their eyes glued to their Blackberry’s rushing off to work.  Outside the elevator stood a man, whom I’m guessing was in his 80’s with beautiful white hair, neatly dressed and leaning on a walker.  There was just something about him standing alone with his walker, as people rushed by that silently screamed, could you stop and help me?

So without hesitation, I asked if he needed help.  And, with a slight accent, he said, “Ambassador…I’m looking for Ambassador”.  Working in the building, I know that Ambassador is a toy store on the retail level of my office building.  I showed him to the elevator and walked him toward the store.  As I started to say goodbye, he reached for my hand, looked me in the eyes and said “thank you…I love you”.  His hands were soft though weathered, fragile yet large and looking for support.  The words “I love you” seemed so natural to hear from this total stranger.

Simply beautiful, you made his day and I’m sure he meant those words.
